Here are the top stories today in Roanoke:

  1. "Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape," is the slogan being shared by Roanoke area Fire EMS departments as National Fire Prevention Week approaches. NFPW begins Oct. 9 and is a week of education and events designed to show people simple steps they can take now to either prevent or help in the case of a home fire later. Roanoke City Fire EMS has a few events planned for residents that will run through October and include an Escape Plan Contest. In the contest, residents are asked to make and share their fire escape plan with the top prize being a meal at a fire station and a ride in a fire truck. To enter the contest visit Roanoke City Fire EMS's website. (WSET)
  2. Inka Grill, a downtown Roanoke restaurant located on Jefferson Street, has been known as the place to go in the Star City for Colombian and Venezuelan food for several years, but now they're adding new South American and Central American flavors to their menu. "My goal has always been to make people happy. Now, they have a taste of my flavor, my culture and my history. It’s great," said General Manager Sharon Cardozo. All of your old favorites are still on the menu including the ceviche and the Lomo Saltado, but along with them will be new, soon-to-be-favorites and a brand-new bar that is being installed on the restaurant's second floor and will be open Thursdays through Sundays. (WSLS)
  3. A new exhibit is opening later this month at the Taubman Museum of Art that will bring paintings by some of the most famous names in art history to the Star City. 'Titian to Monet: European Paintings from Joslyn Art Museum' will open Oct. 14 and feature over 50 pieces of art on loan from the Omaha, Nebraska collection that span nearly 500 years. The exhibit is being presented in partnership with both Virginia Tech and Roanoke College and tickets to an advanced preview on Oct. 8 are now available. (WDBJ)
  4. Virginia Western Community College will soon offer career advice, financial aid assistance, and job training in northwest Roanoke at the EnVision Center, a new community resource being operated by the Roanoke Redevelopment & Housing Authority. Located on Salem Turnpike on the site of the old Melrose Branch Public Library, which has been vacant since 2019, the EnVision Center is set to open its doors on Oct. 7 and is one of six such centers across Virginia designed to help HUD assisted families access services and programs that can make them self-sufficient. "Virginia Western is delighted to bring its resources directly into the Northwest community. We recognize that accessibility can make all the difference in a student pursuing an education." said VWCC President Dr. Robert H. Sandel. (Roanoker Magazine)
  5. Local Celtic musicians Kinnfolk, which you've undoubtedly noticed me plug before because they're one of my favorites, have announced a brand-new album, their second, which is due out on Oct. 14. The husband-and-wife duo recently stopped by WDBJ's Here @ Home segment to talk about bringing the traditional music of the British Isles to the Star City. "We think a lot about what it means for us to be participating in Irish traditional music while being Americans, because as we mentioned before this music is very much alive and exists all around the globe,” Julie Kinn said. "Almost every time if we perform somewhere there are people who come up every time and say, ‘I had no idea I like this kind of music, but my toe was tapping." You can check out the duo's music video for their new single Byker Hill here and be sure to take a look at their website for upcoming appearances in support of their new album, The Knotted Circle.
