Here are the top five stories today in Roanoke:

  1. Roanoke City purchased the former Roanoke Times building located at the intersection of Salem Avenue and 2nd Street last October and has now set up an advisory committee to look into whether the building should be named. One area civic organization, the Roanoke Chapter of the Virginias Jaycees, is campaigning to have the building named after its founder, William 'Bill' Robertson, who passed away last year. Robertson had a long life of public service including time as the principal of Hurt Park Elementary School, the first Black advisor to a Virginia governor and an executive in the presidential administrations of presidents Nixon, Ford and Reagan. A public call for suggestions has been issued and is open through October 11. (Roanoke Rambler, WFIR, Virginia Jaycees)
  2. Katie's Place is an adult day support organization with locations in Roanoke and Lynchburg. This past weekend was its 7th Annual Bowl-a-Thon. Katie's Place is a part of Saint Vincent's Home and focuses on improving the quality of life of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The bowl-a-thon is the primary fundraiser and saw nearly 100 bowlers come to AMF Hilltop Lanes on Williamson Road to help raise money. "[Katie's Place] gives them a place to go and interact with their peers, meet community members, practice social skills. It gives them, kind of, a home away from home during the day,” said Zoe Paxton, the program lead for Katie’s Place. The Bowl-a-Thon's goal was to raise $10,000, but numbers for the event were not immediately available. (WSLS, Katie's Place)
  3. Intercept Health has announced it will be launching a foster care awareness campaign called "No Perfect Families" in which families who attend the scheduled event can receive a free family portrait. The event is scheduled for September 20 at Intercept's Roanoke offices on Airport Road. It is designed to inform families of the critical need for foster parents in Virginia. "We're sending a message loud and clear with our No Perfect Families foster care awareness campaign that you do not have to be perfect in order to become a foster parent!" said Natalie Handy, CEO of Intercept Health. 4. Active duty officers with The United States Coast Guard conducted training exercises with flotillas from the Roanoke and New River Valley areas on Smith Mountain Lake last week. The training included formal daily in-briefs and out-briefs, two evening dinners and was centered around safe recreational boating and individual patrols. The training was held at Auxiliary Detachment Smith Mountain Lake, a volunteer subsidiary known as AUXDET SML and one of the many Coast Guard Auxiliaries around the nation that patrol inland waterways. "It is the responsibility of the Coast Guard and the Coast Guard Auxiliary to patrol the high seas and inland waterways and to promote safety, affect rescue and to enhance national security and environmental protection. All of this takes training and that is why active duty trainers from Coast Guard Station Portsmouth, led by Chief Petty Officer Bill Campbell, showed up at Smith Mountain Lake for four days of training along with a Coast Guard ‘Fastboat’ for use in the evolutions," said Gary Sayre, a member of Coast Guard Public Affairs staff.
