- Police are investigating after a single-vehicle crash left one driver dead late Friday night in Roanoke County. Authorities say the crash occurred around 10:46 p.m. when 33-year-old Nicholas Jimentel ran off the right side of the road and overturned while traveling northbound on Interstate 81. Despite wearing his seatbelt, the driver of the 2005 Chevrolet Suburban reportedly died at the scene. (WSLS)
- The Roanoke County Fire & Rescue Department issued a public safety warning Friday shortly after responding to a rescue call. During the rescue, crews met with a group of hikers from Texas who were in the area with plans to hike the “Triple Crown,” which includes Dragon’s Tooth, McAfee Knob, and Tinker Cliffs. Amid changing seasonal conditions, the department urged hikers to travel safely and exercise caution. (ABC 13 News)
- The Ukrainian community of Roanoke gathered in Freedom Plaza on Friday to celebrate Defender’s Day. The annual tradition honors the sacrifices of Ukrainians fighting to defend their country’s freedom and held special significance this year amid the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. More than a dozen people attended the event over the weekend, gathering in a “Circle of Defenders” meant to call on peace and solidarity for the community. (WSLS)
