• No charges filed in backyard burn that sparked 112-acre IW forest fire (smithfieldtimes.com) — Smithfield’s volunteer firefighters played a key role in containing a 112-acre forest fire in Isle of Wight County that prompted a local State of Emergency and drew help from 18 agencies. Crews set up a mobile command post near Darden’s Country Store and focused on protecting nearby homes until forestry teams cut fire lines. The blaze was contained by late afternoon and under control by early evening.
