We often forget that the United States of America is by and large an immigrant nation, and once we understand this fundamental fact, our mindset changes. Suddenly, we can connect old immigrant generations to new ones. Suddenly, we see the wisdom of what our founding fathers envisioned 238 years ago when they signed the Declaration of Independence.
As a young girl, little did I know that a green card held such considerable value for so many to be able to legally come to the land of the free. Later, as a young adult — and completely proud of the country I had adopted when I became a citizen — I realized how immensely I love America. It is my home; it’s the place where my culture, beliefs and traditions melded to make me the person I have become.
So, you see, my story is no different from any other American. I join my fellow citizens in celebrating this patriotic day. We embrace our country and see it as a symbol of pride, freedom, and hope. Stand up and cheer, it’s July 4th!
