Here are the top five stories in Tysons Corner today:

  1. Timothy McCree, 37, was shot and killed by police after a shoplifting incident on Feb. 22. The D.C. resident had allegedly shoplifted a pair of designer glasses from the Nordstrom department store at Tysons Corner Center. After chasing McCree, police reported they followed him into the woods where he failed to obey to verbal commands and was eventually shot by two officers. McCree was taken to a hopsital where he died of his injuries. The officers involved have been placed on restricted duty as the investigation is ongoing. (WTOP)
  2. A total of 213 Fairfax County Public Schools students received awards in the recent 2023 Regional Scholastic Writing Awards competition. In addition, two students were named American Voices Nominees: Riva Jain (Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology) for her drama script, and Aileen Zhao (McLean High School) for her poetry. In total, 27 of the district's middle and high schools were represented in the regional competition. (Fairfax County Public Schools)
  3. The Fairfax County Public Schools will host an instructional job fair on Mar. 4. The in-person job fair, located at Oakton High School, will be held from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Interested applicants will have a chance to network as well as interview with Fairfax County Public Schools representatives during the fair.   4. In nearby Vienna, cash payments will no longer be accepted at the Dulles Toll Road beginning in March. The toll road, which runs between Tysons Corner and the airport, will only accept electronic payments or issue drivers a pay-by-plate invoice starting on Mar. 1. An estimated 94 percent of travelers through the toll road use EZ Pass and only one percent pay with cash. (Vienna Patch)
  5. Two nearby Virginia cities have earned a top spot on SmartAssest's list of 200 safest large cities in the United States for 2022. Placing in the top 20 cities, Alexandria came in at No. 6 with 1,671 property crimes, 10.9 drug poisoning deaths, 207 violent crimes, and 3.9 vehicular deaths for the year. Arlington came in at No. 11 on the list followed by a handful of other close cities farther down on the list. (Greater Alexandria Patch)
