VIRGINIA — Residents of the D.C. region are preparing for potential snow two times between Friday to Monday.

AccuWeather is tracking a storm that could bring the first accumulating snow of 2025 from central Pennsylvania to Northern Virginia from Sunday night to Monday evening. Forecasters expect several inches of snow to accumulate.

"Residents and visitors across the mid-Atlantic states are also in line to deal with the first winter storm in quite some time, posing a major risk to travel between Sunday night and Monday evening," said AccuWeather Meteorologist Brandon Buckingham.

Before the winter storm Sunday into Monday, there's another chance of snow to wrap up this week. The National Weather Service says snow showers or snow squalls could particularly impact areas near and north of Washington, D.C. during the Friday afternoon and evening commute. The forecast map shows little to no accumulation in areas of Northern Virginia. While areas of northeast Maryland and the Baltimore metro area face a winter weather advisory, Northern Virginia is under a hazardous weather outlook.

The Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang predicts rain showers could transition to snow showers from the early afternoon to the evening. High temperatures around 40 will limit any snow accumulation, except a coating in colder areas north of D.C.

"About 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. has the highest chance for precipitation. A brief visibility-reducing snow squall is possible near the evening commute," the Capital Weather Gang said.

Saturday will provide a reprieve from precipitation, but residents will feel Arctic cold in the 2os or close to 32 degrees and windy conditions. On Sunday into Monday, the National Weather Service's Baltimore-Washington Office expects the region to receive a wintry mix on Sunday into Monday. Forecasters are anticipating significant travel delays and closures.

The Capital Weather Gang hasn't ruled out the first snow falling before sunset but expects steady snowfall to arrive by the late evening into the night. Forecasters say snow mixing with sleet or freezing rain is a particular concern south and east of D.C. Snow and wintry mix could continue into Monday as late as the evening.
