First Snow Of 2025: Snow Removal Policies To Know In Vienna
With the forecast calling for the first measurable snow of the year, here's what to know about who removes snow.
VIENNA, VA — It won't take long in the new year for the first snow to blanket the region. Forecasters are expecting a winter storm to bring accumulating snow to Vienna and the rest of Northern Virginia Sunday into Monday.
In the Town of Vienna, the town clears snow on its public streets, starting with primary routes before secondary routes and neighborhood streets. Treating roads begins before a storm, while plowing will happen with an accumulation of two inches or more. The Town of Vienna urges residents to avoid parking on-street and on snow emergency routes to alleviate snow removal.
The Virginia Department of Transportation plows the roads in Fairfax County, except for a few private roads that are the responsibility of the homeowner or a homeowner association. Fairfax County only removes snow on streets with designated blue signs, and reports for those streets can be sent to the county's Maintenance & Stormwater Management Division.

Tips from the town on snow removal include:
- Do not travel during snow and ice storms unless absolutely necessary
- Avoid parking on the street during plowing (parking in a driveway reduces the chances of having to shovel a vehicle out of a snow drift)
- Do not shovel snow from sidewalks and driveways into the roadway
- Clear snow from hydrants so firefighters can respond more quickly in an emergency
- Keep water meter enclosures clear of snow and ice during winter weather (if the meter cannot be read due to obstruction from snow or ice, an estimated water bill will be rendered)
- Shovel sidewalks as soon as possible after the storm has ended and help out a neighbor who may be unable, for health or other reasons, to shovel.
