Letter To The Editor: Protect Vienna’s Green Spaces from Invasive Species
A resident calls for more action on combating invasive plant species to protect Vienna's natural environment.

Dear Editor,
Vienna’s natural beauty and tree canopy are part of what makes our town such a special place to live. Unfortunately, invasive plant species are threatening that very character. Non-native plants like English ivy, kudzu, and Japanese stiltgrass spread aggressively, choking out native trees and wildflowers. These invaders not only damage the health of our forests and parks but also reduce food sources for local wildlife that depend on native plants.
If left unmanaged, invasives climb and strangle trees, erode soil, and make it difficult for new plants to grow. Over time, the biodiversity that supports pollinators, birds, and small mammals is lost. The impact is already visible in neighborhoods and along trails such as the W&OD.

As residents, we can help by learning to identify invasives, removing them from our yards, and planting native alternatives. Community volunteer efforts, such as park cleanups and town-led restoration programs, deserve our strong support. Protecting Vienna’s green spaces means acting now before these species overwhelm our environment.
Sincerely,
