Madison High School Student Starts App To Help With Economics

Hundreds of students have used an app developed by a Madison High School student to help them better grasp economics lessons.

VIENNA, VA — James Madison High School student Abhinav Maddala had noticed classmates, like himself, were struggling with economics. The student felt like traditional studying resources were "outdated and unengaging." That's why Maddala decided to create an app called Quizonomics.

"Economics is a subject that requires both critical thinking and a strong understanding of theories, and I wanted to create a resource that could bridge the gap between classroom lectures and student comprehension," Maddala told Patch. "I realized that interactive, accessible, and customizable resources like practice quizzes could really help students test their knowledge and better retain key concepts."

To develop the app, Maddala first researched and compiled practice questions covering a wide range of economics topics. Maddala collaborated with the school's economics teachers to learn which topics students find most difficult and which areas need more practice. The questions on the Quizonomics app vary in difficulty and provide explanations for the correct answers.

On the technical side, Maddala developed the app's user interface and worked to ensure it was easy for students to use. Students and teachers helped provide feedback during the app's testing period. Maddala continues to smooth out any lingering issues with the app.

The app's learn section includes a range of lessons, from basic macroeconomics and microeconomics concepts, the financial sector and international trade to supply and demand, competition models, and government intervention in markets. In addition, there are review sections for Advanced Placement Macroeconomics and Microeconomics classes, which high school students can take for college credit with a minimum score.

Students can test their knowledge in the practice section of the app with questions on economics. Users can complete sections at their own pace and track their progress and understanding of lessons, according to Maddala.

Maddala estimated more than 300 students, at Madison High School and other Fairfax County schools, have used Quizonomics. The student wants to expand the app's reach, making it a widely-used resource in different schools and districts.

"I personally know multiple classmates that witnessed an increase in scores after downloading the app," said Maddala. "By offering a more personalized and interactive way to learn, students have the opportunity to strengthen their knowledge and prepare more effectively for tests and exams. It’s been rewarding to see how the app has helped students become more confident in their understanding of economics.

After high school, Maddala wants to pursue career aspirations blending finance and service.

"I’ve always had a deep interest in finance, particularly in investment banking, but I also want to ensure that the work I do can benefit others," said Maddala. I envision a career where I can use my skills in finance to create opportunities for individuals and communities to grow and succeed, whether it’s through financial literacy initiatives, investment strategies that help underserved communities, or other forms of impactful financial services."

Maddala said the support from peers and teachers "has been crucial in helping me bring Quizonomics to life."

"I feel incredibly proud of what I’ve accomplished with Quizonomics," said Maddala. "It’s a project that took a lot of time, effort, and perseverance, and seeing the positive impact it has had on students makes all the hard work worthwhile. I am proud to have built something that addresses a real need in the educational community, and it motivates me to continue creating resources that can make a difference."
