VIENNA, VA — After a push for a permanent composting location, one has opened in the Town of Vienna.

The town government's website said the permanent composting drop-off site opened Monday in the 400 Block of Mill St NE near the purple glass recycling bin. Residents can drop off food scraps and other composting materials at the site 24/7. Signage at the site shows what can and cannot be composted.

The site comes after a composting pilot at the Vienna Farmers Market in 2024 and 2025. The pilot's success led the town's Conservation and Sustainability Commission to seek a permanent site. The commission said diverting the organic matter reduces waste, which results in less tipping fees paid by taxpayers.
