Road Diet To Add Bike Lanes Considered Near Dunn Loring Metro Station

Bike lanes would be added through a proposed road diet on a key route near the Dunn Loring Metro station.

MERRIFIELD, VA — Fairfax County will see if there's an appetite for a road diet near the Dunn Loring Metro station during a public meeting in late January.

The Fairfax County Department of Transportation will hold a virtual meeting on a proposed Prosperity Avenue road diet on Monday, Jan. 27 at 7 p.m. The county is proposing to remove two through lanes of the four-lane road between Hilltop Road and Gallows Road to add protected bike lanes. That would bring the road down to one through lane in each direction. Four to two lane reductions typically maintain a center two-way turning lane.

According to the county, the road diet would boost multimodal access to the Dunn Loring Metro station as well as improve safety and provide traffic calming. Design of the project is being funded through the Metropolitan Washington Council of Government's Transit Within Reach program.
