VIENNA, VA — From routine maintenance to a significant traffic signal project on major traffic corridors, the Town of Vienna Public Works is working to advance numerous projects this summer.

Public Works staff provided updates on summer projects on the latest episode of "On Deck With Mercury," a series hosted by Town Manager Mercury Payton.

One of the major projects discussed was the Maple Avenue and Nutley Street Traffic Signal Improvement Project, which seeks to improve traffic flow on the busy routes of Maple Avenue and Nutley Street. Signal technology are being completed at 14 intersections. The project started construction in spring 2024.

"As most resident know, the traffic along our two major corridors, which are Maple Avenue and Nutley Street, it can be pretty rough sometimes, and I think that it's one of our priorities," said Alan Chen, deputy director of engineering at the Town of Vienna's Public Works.

Chen estimated the project could be complete in the fall. Work that's still underway are major rebuilds at the intersections of Nutley Street and Tapawingo Road, as well as Maple Avenue and Follin Lane.

According to Chen, the project will improve traffic flow by increasing the numbers of vehicles arriving on green lights.

"We're upgrading the equipment at these intersections to allow just one centralized location to gather all the data in real time, it will allow communication between signals," said Chen. "This project will also provide recommendations for the town to adjust the signal timings and analyze performance in real time."

Intersections included in the project are Maple Avenue East at Follin Road SE, Maple Avenue East at East Street, Maple Avenue East at Beulah Road, Maple Avenue East at Branch Road, Maple Avenue East at Glyndon Street, Maple Avenue East at Park Street, Maple Avenue East at Washington & Old Dominion Trail, Maple Avenue West at Center Street, Maple Avenue West at Courthouse Road SW/Lawyers Road NW, Maple Avenue West at Vienna Plaza, Maple Avenue West at Nutley Street, Maple Avenue/Chain Bridge Road and James Madison Drive, Nutley Street SW at Courthouse Road, and Nutley Street SW at Tapawingo Road SW.

The town officials also discussed the Pavement Condition Index used to prioritize street repairs, water main replacements, sidewalk projects and more. The full episode is available to view on the town's YouTube channel.
