VIRGINIA — A mix of snow and freezing rain on Tuesday morning has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a winter weather advisory for northern Virginia and Washington, D.C. Little snow accumulation is expected on Christmas Eve.

"Light freezing rain accumulations are expected with temps in the 20s, which will lead to treacherous travel conditions during the Tuesday morning commute," the NWS office for Baltimore-Washington, D.C. said.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for the District of Columbia, plus Fairfax, Arlington, Falls Church, Alexandria, Fauquier, Loudoun, Prince William, Manassas and Manassas Park. The advisory is in effect from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Total ice accumulation of a light glaze to a few hundredths of an inch is expected. A dusting to one-tenth of an inch of snow is possible in parts of DC, Maryland, and northern Virginia.

Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous, the weather service said Monday. Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the Tuesday morning commute.

Precipitation will begin as light freezing rain early Tuesday morning along and west of US-15, then begins along the Interstate 95 corridor around or just before sunrise. Some snow could mix in at times, though that is most likely along and north of Interstate 70, the Weather Service said. Precipitation transitions to a mix of rain and freezing rain late Tuesday morning, before ending early Tuesday afternoon.

Monday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 23. South wind around 6 mph.

Monday Night: A chance of freezing rain, mainly after 5am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 23. South wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Tuesday: Rain, snow, and freezing rain likely before 11am, then a chance of rain between 11am and 4pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 43. Light and variable wind. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Little or no ice accumulation expected. Little or no snow accumulation expected.

Tuesday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 31. Light north wind.

Christmas Day: Partly sunny, with a high near 42. Northeast wind 3 to 5 mph.

Wednesday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 29.

Thursday: Partly sunny, with a high near 41.

Thursday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 29.

Friday: Partly sunny, with a high near 44.

Friday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 32.
