Swastika Found In Madison High School Bathroom

Madison High School's principal told families that a swastika appeared in a school bathroom.

VIENNA, VA — A swastika was found in a bathroom at Vienna's Madison High School earlier this week, according to school officials.

Principal Liz Calvert informed families Thursday of the swastika etched into a wall in a boys bathroom on the school's second floor. Staff quickly removed the symbol and started an investigation.

Calvert said the school will take action under the Students Rights and Responsibility policies against those responsible for the swastika.

"We want to be clear that FCPS does not tolerate this kind of behavior in our schools," Calvert wrote. "It is unacceptable that any student, staff, or visitor at Madison High School feels that this is appropriate behavior. This is not the kind of school community we seek to cultivate."

The principal said the school is working with the Chief Equity Office on school-based conversations "about dignity, humanization and belonging," and families are encouraged to do the same at home. Calvert asked for family input on making the school "more welcoming and culturally responsive."
