Vienna Bike/Walk Challenge: Day 2 Results

More than 940 kids biked or walked to class Tuesday in Vienna despite the rain.

Updated 3:41 p.m. Tuesday

Despite rain throughout Tuesday morning, 945 kids biked or walked to school in Vienna as part of the Bike/Walk Challenge – exceeding Monday's total by more than 70 students.

While the number of bikers dwindled from Monday at some schools, in others they flourished: Wolftrap saw more bikers Tuesday than in the first day of the challenge. Most schools didn't see a significant drop because of the weather, and overall, most posted higher numbers than the day before.

Wolftrap Elementary has taken the lead in the Challenge Cup, awarded to the school with the largest percentage increase in participants over last year's challenge.

Adam Mohning, one of the school's physical education teachers, and Principal Teresa Khuluki joined in Wolftrap's walking and biking trains Tuesday morning.

Ivette Hess of www.bikesfortheworld.org also joined in on the fun, as Wolftrap collects old bikes to donate to the mission, Safe Routes to School coordinator Jeff Anderson said.

Rookie Westbriar Elementary is holding its lead in the biking cup, awarded to  the highest percentage of participants that biked.

All six Vienna schools participating in the Bike/Walk Challenge — along with Flint Hill Elementary School and Kilmer Middle School — are gearing up for national Bike to School Day on Wednesday.

As of last week, 34 schools across Fairfax County had signed up to participate.

Ahead of that event and the entire challenge week, Vienna Elementary School physical education teacher Jon Sidilau, along with parent volunteers Sean McCall and Sonya Marsden, held a special gym class with students in fourth through sixth grades that focused specifically on bicycle safety.

Topics included the "ABCs" (Air Brake Chain), helmet safety, how to lock up a bike, W&OD Trail safety, and bicycle laws — including the Vienna law that children 14 and under wear a helmet.

McCall said he hopes to give the 45-minute class twice a year going forward: once in the fall and again in the spring.
