Vienna Votes: Democrats, Incumbents Take Races
A look at how candidates fared in Vienna precincts

Incumbents largely swept Vienna-area races Tuesday night.
Sens. Chap Petersen and Janet Howell, along with Del. Mark Keam (unopposed) Del. Ken Plum and Del. Barbara Comstock were easily re-elected to their Virginia General Assembly seats on Tuesday, leading to a largely Democratic sweep in Vienna-area elections.
Petersen took 59.72 percent of the vote versus Culipher's 40.24 percent. Voter turnout in the 34th District came in at 29.82 percent.

Petersen, of Fairfax City, has served in the state Senate for one term, but previously represented the area as a delegate for two terms.
"It's been a tough year for Democrats. I'm humble," Petersen said. "My hat's off to my opponent. She ran a spirited campaign."

Howell, representing the 36th District since 1992, . As of 12:05 a.m., Howell had 60.17 percent of the vote over Forrest's 39.77 percent. With 44 of the 32nd District's 51 precincts reporting, voter turnout stands at 26.57 percent.
Plum, beat Mac Cannon, 61 percent to 38 percent.
Plum said he was pleased with the Democrats' results on Election Day.
"The Democrats are in tune with voters in Fairfax County," Plum said at the county democrats' party in Fairfax. "I am hoping the rest of Virginia will recognize that.
"The news in Fairfax County was good," Plum said. "It's not necessarily going to be good news statewide. But you are sending a hearty group down to Richmond, and we will continue to fight for you."
It was a closer race for Del. Barbara Comstock(34-R), as she held onto her seat with 55 percent of the district-wide vote to Republican challenger Pamela Danner's 45 percent. In Vienna, Danner only trailed by nine votes.
Pat Hynes, the Democratic endorsee, defeated Nancy Linton for the Fairfax County School Board Hunter Mill seat with nearly 57 percent of the county vote. Ilryong Moon, Vienna native Ryan McElveen and Ted Velkoff earned the at-large school board seats. They were also the top three among voters in Vienna.
Democrat Cathy Hudgins, who ran unopposed, will return to her seat as Hunter Mill Supervisor. Providence District Sup. Linda Smythe defeated Republican Challenger Chris Grisafe by nearly 30 percent.
In the Board of Supervisors chairperson’s race,, Independent candidate Will Radle and Independent candidate Christopher DeCarlo.
"Local and state elections really matter," Bulova said. "It is what affects you every day."
In the Fairfax County Sheriffs race, Incumbent Democrat Stan Barry beat Republican Bill Cooper 54.40 percent to 45.53 percent.
Five candidates ran for three open positions for Fairfax County Soil and Water Conservation director in the Northern Virginia District. Winners were Johna Good Gagnon, George W. Lamb and John W. Peterson.
Current Commonwealth’s Attorney Raymond Morrogh, a Democrat, ran unopposed. Morrogh has been CA since 2007.
