- An arrest has been made after the Frederick County double homicide in April. Jason Matthew William Bowen has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder for shooting two of his coworkers to death, Pamela Marie Lowande and Joshua Daniel Carter, at a home on Fromans Road. The incident is believed to have been a targeted attack and Bowen is being detained at the Northwestern Regional Adult Detention Center without bond. (The Winchester Star)
- A Frederick County Fire Rescue Recruit has passed away at Winchester Medical Center after a sudden medical emergency. Ian T. Strickler began his fire training on Jul. 3, 2023 and was in Recruit Class #14. According to the Frederick County Fire and Rescue Department Facebook page, his death is being recognized as a Line of Duty death with all honors. (Firehouse)
- The Winchester Star’s Softball Coach of the Year award has been given to Patrick Gibson, the coach of James Wood High School! Despite this year being Gibson’s first, the team set a school record of 22-3 and came out victorious in their tournaments, making it to states for the first time. Patrick says the biggest disappointment of the season was the Sherando loss of seven to two, and even though the team is losing seven senior players this year, he is still very optimistic for next year.
