Here are the top three stories in Winchester today:
- The Interstate 66 eastbound bridge over the U.S. 340-522 interchange could be renamed for Trooper Kevin C. Manion, a Virginia State Police Trooper assigned to the Area 13 office in Winchester and who patrolled Warren County. Manion was killed in the line of duty in 2006 when an unsecured rifle stowed behind the seat of a pickup truck discharged as the truck was pulled onto a rollback tow truck. The Warren County Board of Supervisors recently approved a resolution to request a name change from the Commonwealth Transportation Board. (The Winchester Star)
- On Wednesday, Handley High School's Elizabeth Imoh and Pierce Francis signed letters of intent to participate in Division I college athletics. Imoh is a preferred walk-on with the NCAA Division I Cavaliers' track and field team and Francis will run cross country and track and field for NCAA Division I Marist College in Poughkeepsie. (The Winchester Star)
- From Jul. 18 through Jul. 20, Winchester kids aged 13 through 18 are invited to join
the Winchester Police Department, Winchester Fire & Rescue, and Virginia Army National Guard for an interactive Public Safety & Military Career Preview. Local kids will have the opportunity to see if the careers interest them through hands-on scenarios, live demonstrations, and more. The preview takes place from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Winchester RIT Center on Woodstock Lane. Click here to request more information. (Winchester Police Department)
