  1. The Winchester Board of Architectural Review (BAR) was criticized by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources for the board's April decision to allow a Historic District homeowner to keep changes he made to his house at 119 S. Washington Street. The homeowner made the changes without seeking the BAR's approval, but later the BAR decided to let the changes remain. The Virginia Department of Historic Resources said the decision may not have been consistent with its own guidelines or the U.S. Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation, and "Deviation from this consistency could impact decisions the board will have to make in the future and impact Winchester's preservation program as a whole."(Subscription: Winchester Star)
  2. Winchester's newest bakery, Knead Bread, offers baked goods made from scratch following old family recipes from Calabria, Italy. The bakery, located at 28 E Piccadilly Street in Winchester, is owned by brother-sister team Lenora Schmecko and Vincenzo Mazzone. Knead Bread held its soft opening on May 20, now officially open Wednesdays through Sundays between 6:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. (Subscription: Winchester Star)
  3. The Northern Shenandoah Valley Region is updating its Hazard Mitigation Plan and is asking residents to take an online survey to help create the best plan. The county will use the survey answers to best prepare for natural disasters. The deadline for the survey is today, Jun. 5. (Frederick County VA via Twitter)
