- On May 25, 36-year-old Andre Robert Israel of Winchester was sentenced to 31 years in prison for raping a 24-year-old woman with autism and diminished intellect. A jury at the Frederick County Circuit Court found him guilty of rape, object sexual penetration, two felony counts of sodomy, and two misdemeanor counts of sexual battery. (Winchester Star)
- Almost 200 roadside banners that honor military veterans have been placed in the Northern Shenandoah Valley as Memorial Day approaches. Les Veach, a Winchester City Council member who volunteers with the region's Hometown Veteran Heroes banner project, said that 73 of the 174 total banners are in the City of Winchester as of Sunday, May 21. Each banner features the photo and name of a military veteran from Winchester, Stephens City, Middletown, Berryville and Clarke County, whether or not they still live in the area. (Winchester Star)
