Here are the top three stories today in Winchester:

  1. The City of Winchester's "Pickup Parties" are a new, fun twist on its monthly community cleanups! Participants are encouraged to wear clothes or costumes that reflect each month's unique theme, such as Shark Week, Halloween, or the 1990s. The first Pickup Party will be held on Apr. 6 at Friendship Park on North Pleasant Valley Road and the theme is Superheroes. Visit the link to learn more and to see the rest of the Pickup Party schedule. (Subscription: Winchester Star)
  2. The Winchester Police Department is offering internship opportunities for high school and college students during its Kids and Cops Camp. Interns will help guide the campers through activities and an annual kickball tournament throughout the week. Students interested in recreation management, event planning, and child care careers would benefit from this internship. The camp begins Jun. 26 and internship applications are due by Apr. 21.

  3. The Frederick County Sheriff's Office posted photos of two Reckless Driving tickets on their social media. One summons is for a driver traveling 96 miles-per-hour in a posted 65 miles-per-hour speed zone on Route 37. The second summons is for a driver traveling 94 miles-per-hour in a posted 45 miles-per-hour speed zone on Route 7. Due to the large difference between the posted speed and their actual speed, the traffic infraction changes from “speeding” to a Class 1 Misdemeanor of "Reckless Driving by Speed." The sheriff's office wanted to remind the community that speeding is not a victimless crime and there are fatalities on the road due to speeding. And deputies will continue to ticket drivers who ignore the speed limits. (Frederick County Virginia Sheriff's Office via Facebook)
