LAKE RIDGE, VA — A fire at a Lake Ridge home was traced back to a fireplace and displaced five residents Saturday, according to Prince William County Fire and Rescue.

Around 3:45 p.m. Saturday, units responded to the 3400 block of Aviary Way for a townhouse on fire. Firefighters encountered smoke showing and fire spreading into the attic in the rear of the home. The fire was quickly put out, and there were no injuries.

Five residents were displaced, as the home had moderate damage from the fire and was deemed unsafe to occupy. The Red Cross is assisting the two adults and three children.

An investigation by the fire marshal's office determined a faulty flue in the fireplace caused the fire. Prince William County Fire and Rescue said residents should have fireplaces and chimneys inspected and cleaned by trained service technicians at least once a year to prevent fires or chimney failures. The fire department said the ideal time for an inspection is before heating season.
