The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Prince William County Fire and Rescue said the spread of the fire was limited by working smoke alarms and the door being closed where the fire started. Smoke alarms alerted residents to the fire, allowing them time to escape the smoke and gases caused by the fire. The fire department encourages residents to keep working smoke alarms and make it a habit to keep bedroom doors closed.
