Shooting Dumfries Resident In Face Leads To 20-Year Prison Sentence
The shooting at a motel off Route 234 left the victim with permanent injuries, according to Prince William County prosecutors.
PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, VA — A shooting at the now-closed Econo Lodge off Route 234 has prompted a 20-year prison sentence, according to the Prince William County Commonwealth's Attorney.
A judge had found Ishmeal McGriff guilty of aggravated malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a non-violent felon in June following a guilty plea. On Wednesday, a judge sentenced McGriff to 28 years in prison with eight years suspended, leaving 20 years of prison time. Supervised probation will follow his release.
The sentence stems from a March 26, 2023 shooting at the Econo Lodge (17005 Dumfries Rd, Dumfries, VA), which is no longer open. Prosecutors say McGriff called a friend for a ride and asked for a ride to the hospital. The friend refused the ride due to the number of people in the car. Police say McGriff aruged with the vehicle occupants and shot the victim in the face.

The victim survived the shooting but has permanent damage to his jaw and lower face.
"The defendant's actions that day were reprehensible and we are grateful that the Judge imposed a sentence above the guidelines that reflects the seriousness of this case," said Commonwealth's Attorney Amy Ashworth. "Mr. McGriff's actions in firing a gun into the face of an individual seated in a car were deadly and reckless and it is a miracle that the victim survived, although sadly with significant injuries."
