WOODBRIDGE, VA — Winter weather damage has prompted a closure of a pier at Leesylvania State Park in Woodbridge, according to Virginia State Parks.

The state parks announced Friday the fishing pier was closed "effective immediately" due to structural damage caused by ice and extreme winter weather. The state parks will need to make repairs to the structure.

"Most of the bracing has broken underneath and the roof portion of the pier also has extensive damage to the pillars holding it up," said Leesylvania State Park manager Kenneth Ashdown in a news release. "It is not safe for the pier to be open to the public at this time and we hope to have this repaired as soon as possible."

The park remains open, and the closure only affects the fishing area. A timeline for reopening is not yet available.

"The repairs might interfere with the night fishing programs that will be held in March, but we are looking to find another location for this program," said Ashdown.
