Mount Rainier Shutters Some Roads, Campgrounds For Fall

With the seasons changing, Mount Rainier National Park is beginning to wind down certain operations for the season. Here's what to know.

MOUNT RAINIER, WA — With fall underway, and the weather soon taking a turn to feel like it, officials are letting late-season visitors to Mount Rainier National Park know that fewer roads, campgrounds and facilities will be available as the park begins shifting its operations for the colder, wetter months.

While Cayuse and Chinook passes still should have some time left before they close for the winter, a few areas of the park are already winding down.

Here are the closures at Mount Rainier (as of Monday, Oct 17):

Closed for the fall & winter

  • Sunrise Road
  • Ohanapecosh Visitor Center & Campground
  • Longmire, White River, & Paradise Wilderness Info Centers
  • Cougar Rock & White River Campgrounds
  • Paradise Inn
  • Mowich Lake Road
  • Paradise Valley Road
  • Ricksecker Point Road
  • Stevens Canyon Road (closed to all recreation due to ongoing construction work).

Cycling and hiking are still allowed on closed roads provided crews are not actively working or signs are otherwise posted. Visitors can check the status of park entrances and roads online or call 360-569-2211 for current road conditions. The status and hours of various park facilities are available here.
