DIABLO, WA — With mountain snow in the forecast, state transportation crews will close State Route 20, between Diablo and Mazama, for the season Wednesday morning. Every year, the Washington State Department of Transportation closes the route through the Cascade Mountains once snow fills the avalanche chutes next to the highway.

WSDOT said this year marks the latest closure date of the North Cascades Highway in more than a decade.

Early on, the closure will run between the Ross Dam Trailhead and Silver Star Gate. Once heavier snowfall begins, the closure will stretch from Colonial Creek Campground to Early Winters Campground. Hikers, skiers, and snomobiliers are allowed to access the closed highway for recreation, but vehicles must be parked in designated areas.
