Teen Loses Hand Playing With Fireworks In Federal Way: Firefighters

A 14-year-old boy lost a hand playing with fireworks in Federal Way, where fireworks are illegal. A 10-year-old boy was also hurt.

FEDERAL WAY, WA — A teenager in Federal Way lost a hand while playing with fireworks over the weekend, fire officials said.

A 10-year-old boy was also hurt, firefighters wrote in a Facebook post. It was not immediately clear how severe that child's injuries were.

Crews with South King Fire and Rescue were sent to 19th Avenue Southwest, near Southwest 340th Street, on Monday evening. Firefighters found a 14-year-old boy who lost his left hand while playing with fireworks, officials said. His right hand was also injured.

Their lives "are forever changed over one decision, to play with fireworks," the fire department said. "Our hearts go out to both boys as they work through the next phase in their lives," South King Fire and Rescue said.

Firefighters advised the public to leave fireworks to professionals and attend a public show.

"Please, don’t play with fireworks. They are now illegal in over 70% of the cities and all of Unincorporated King County. They have been illegal in Federal Way and Des Moines for years," the fire department said.
