Washington School District Arms Teachers With Tee Ball Bats

In case of a school shooting, the teachers might be able to defend their classrooms, school officials say.

DAYTON, WA - A rural school district in Eastern Washington is handing out tee ball bats to teachers to help them defend their classrooms in the event of an active shooter, according to reports.

The teachers were trained to use the bats in a shooting event by Force Dynamics, a security training company in Eastern Washington run by a former Washington State Patrol trooper. Jon Landines trained the Dayton School District teachers to use the bat in the event a shooter tries to enter a classroom through a door.

The doorway is where a shooter is most vulnerable, Landines told KING 5.

"Law enforcement calls it the fatal funnel. They don’t know what’s on the other side of the door," Landines told the station.

Rich Wood, spokesman for the Washington Education Association union, told KING 5 handing out bats is just as good as giving guns to teachers - and it won't solve the gun violence problem in the U.S.
