📰 News we're reading

• BI appoints new city attorney following Haney's retirement (bainbridgereview.com) — Bainbridge Island has hired former deputy city attorney Andrew Tsoming to serve as city attorney for 2026, replacing longtime municipal lawyer Jim Haney. At the same meeting, the City Council created a new Mobility Advisory Committee to advise on transportation issues, building on the city’s Sustainable Transportation Plan and signaling continued focus on safer, greener ways to get around the island.

• Utility rate discounts for low-income BI residents start in January (bainbridgereview.com) — Starting in January, Bainbridge Island residents on city water and sewer making $65,000 or less will qualify for at least a 50% utility discount, with deeper cuts for lower incomes. The expanded program, adopted by the City Council, aims to soften steep rate hikes but currently only covers single-family homes with individual meters, leaving many condo and apartment residents out for now.

• BI adopts ADA plan, $3.6 million in fixes to start (bainbridgereview.com) — Bainbridge Island’s City Council has approved a citywide ADA transition plan, launching $3.6 million in priority accessibility fixes over the next five years, mostly in Winslow. The study found only a fraction of sidewalks, curb ramps, and bus stops currently meet ADA standards, and residents have already raised concerns about gaps outside Winslow, debris, lighting, and service-animal definitions.
