Bellevue Students Earn National Merit Scholarship Awards

A Newport High School student and a Bellevue High School student earned corporate-sponsored National Merit Scholarship awards.

Marigold F. Bays-Muchmore of won a National Merit Boeing Scholarship. The Boeing Company supports Merit Scholarship awards annually for children of employees. The Merit Scholarship awards are a part of the Boeing Company's comprehensive aid to education program.

Robin M. Winstanley of  won a National Merit SAIC Scholarship. Probable career field, mathematics. Science Applications International Corporation is an employee-owned company whose principal business involves the application of scientific expertise, together with computer systems technology, to solve complex technical problems. The sponsorship of these awards for children of SAIC employees reflects the company's concern for excellence and also permits the company to share the parents' and the community's pride in the past achievements and future aspirations of outstanding youth.

They were among approximately 1,000 distinguished high school seniors across the country who have won corporate-sponsored National Merit Scholarship awards financed by about 200 corporations, company foundations, and other business organizations.

Scholars were selected from students who advanced to the Finalist level in the National Merit Scholarship competition and met criteria of their scholarship sponsors. Corporate sponsors provide National Merit Scholarships for Finalists who are children of their employees, who are residents of communities the company serves, or who plan to pursue college majors or careers the sponsor wishes to encourage.

Most of these awards are renewable for up to four years of college undergraduate study and provide annual stipends that range from $500 to $10,000 per year. Some provide a single payment between $2,500 and $5,000. Recipients can use their awards at any regionally accredited U.S. college or university of their choice.
