Bellevue Paramedic Throws First Pitch at Mariner's Game

Paul Hyatt, Bellevue Fire Department paramedic, was honored for receiving the Medic One Foundation's 2013 Spirit of Team Play Award, because he led the way in raising money for an ex-firefighter suffering from burn injuries sustained on the job.

Paul Hyatt, Bellevue Fire Department paramedic, threw the first pitch at Thursday's Seattle Mariner's game against the Red Sox.

Hyatt was honored for receiving the Medic One Foundation’s 2013 Spirit of Team Play Award, because he led the way in raising money for a former local firefighter who was injured on the job, according to a press release.

The following information was provided by the Medic One Foundation:

Hyatt learned that the firefighter, who was severely burned while battling a house fire, was spending six months in the hospital recovering from his injuries and was suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome. The firefighter and his wife were also expecting a baby, according to a press release.

Hyatt raised money for the firefighter through his local union and through other agencies and the Washington State Council of Firefighters, the press release stated.

“I am certain that Paul’s compassionate efforts to help this fellow citizen and previous firefighter were nothing short of incredible in the eyes of the beneficiary,” said Bellevue Fire Medic One Captain Chuck Heitz, in a prepared statement. “For all who have the privilege of working with Paul, it is unanimously agreed upon that Paul sets an example of the highest caliber.”

Sponsored by the Medic One Foundation, Philips Healthcare, and the Seattle Mariners, the Spirit of Team Play award is presented annually to the paramedic who best models the personal and professional behavior consistent with the expectations of both the general public and profession.
