'Betty White Challenge' Raises Thousands For Sumner Shelter
Dozens of donors stepped forward to help out in honor of the late actress.
SUMNER, WA — Metro Animal Services and the City of Sumner are celebrating after raising thousands of dollars to help pets in need.
According to the latest update from the city, a total of 68 donors gave $2,600 dollars to support Metro Animal Services on Monday. Metro Animal Services runs a shelter in Puyallup, but is operated by the City of Sumner, and supports homeless animals in Algona, Bonney Lake, Edgewood, Milton and Pacific.
The money was raised as part of the nationwide "Betty White Challenge." White passed away in December. She was a famed animal lover, and would have turned 100 on Jan. 17. In honor of her memory, pet shelters across the country announced donation drives in her name.

Other Betty White Challenge drives have been similarly successful: Canada's Guelph Humane Society says it raised over $50,000 to help homeless pets. Trisha Yearwood, the singer, author and Garth Brooks' wife, also raised $30,000 for animal rescue charities, Fox reported.
Though Sumner's drive has ended, the city says it is always accepting donations for Metro Animal Services. To learn more about the shelter, or to donate yourself, you can visit Metro Animal Service's website.
