SUMNER, WA — One person is in the hospital and another is behind bars after a suspected DUI driver plowed into another vehicle in Sumner early Monday morning.
According to Washington State Patrol Trooper Robert Reyer, a vehicle had been driving on the wrong direction on SR-167 at around 2:30 a.m. As the wrong-way driver approached the intersection with 24th St E., they rammed another vehicle head-on. The collision scattered debris all across the roadway— first responders closed the road in both directions for several hours as crews worked to clear the scene.
The road has since been fully reopened.

As Reyer reports, upon arriving at the scene, investigators found the wrong-way driver unharmed, and arrested them on suspicion of impaired driving. Unfortunately, the other driver was not so lucky and suffered severe injuries and had to be taken to a nearby hospital. Though their injuries are serious, they are expected to survive.
Monday morning's crash was Pierce County's second major DUI collision in just under 24 hours. Early Sunday, a suspected drunk driver flew off SR-509 in Tacoma, falling down onto I-705 below.
