Train Strikes, Kills Pedestrian In Sumner

A pedestrian was killed when they were struck by a train at the Maple Street crossing in Sumner early Thursday.

SUMNER, WA — A train struck and killed a pedestrian in Sumner early Thursday, forcing a number of road closures in the nearby area.

According to the City of Sumner, the crash happened just before 8 a.m. at the Maple Street train track crossing. Investigators have not identified the victim, but say he was an older man with no identification on him at the time of the crash. The train was a northbound BNSF freight locomotive.

As a result of the crash, nearby portions of Maple, Alder, Cherry and Kincaid streets were closed while first responders clear the scene — they have all since been reopened.

While first responders have not declared the death a suicide, the City of Sumner is reminding residents that the Pierce County Crisis Line is free and available to offer support to those in crisis 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Thursday's crash marks just one week since a similar deadly accident. On Oct. 28, a train struck and killed a pedestrian in Puyallup.
