WSDOT To Add New Lane To Northbound SR 167 This Summer

The department says they're hopeful the change will limit traffic backups between Puyallup, Sumner and Auburn.

SUMNER, WA — The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is working on a proposal to add an extra lane to State Route 167 between Sumner and Auburn.

The agency says it's aware that drivers who use the route to commute experience pretty regular traffic congestion. To cut down on those irritating back-ups, WSDOT says it's planning to add a new, high-occupancy-vehicle (HOV) lane on northbound SR 167.

The lane will start near SR 410, and will continue north across the border with King County, all the way until it meets the existing SR 167 HOT lane near Auburn:

The project will also add new traffic cameras and ramp meters to manage the flow of traffic as cars pull onto the highway.

Construction is expected to begin sometime this spring, though there is no definite timeline yet. Sometime after its completion, the HOV lane will transition into an Express Toll Lane.
