Snohomish County Looks To Improve Pedestrian Access At Busy Locations

Improvements are Scheduled for Damson Road near Hilltop Elementary and Airport Road near Paine Field

EVERETT, Wash., July 26, 2021 – Public Works is taking advantage of the warm, dry days of summer to improve pedestrian access along two busy locations in Lynnwood and Everett. Snohomish County Public Works will install a new sidewalk along Damson Rd near Hilltop Elementary, and upgrade pedestrian ramps and curbside signals along Airport Rd near Paine Field.

Damson Rd Sidewalk Extension

Public Works will address sidewalk gaps along the west side of Damson Rd on the opposite side of the road from Hilltop Elementary School in Lynnwood. Crews will install a concrete sidewalk north of Hilltop Fire Station (20510 Damson Rd). This work connects sidewalks for residents and students of Hilltop Elementary School.

Traffic impacts will be minimal and last approximately 10 days:

• Beginning the first week of August, crews will work Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
• There will be single lane closures on the two-lane street, requiring one-way traffic during construction hours with two-way traffic returning at the end of the workday day.
• Pedestrian assistance through the work zone will be available during construction hours. Access to the crosswalk will be available during non-construction hours.

Airport Road APS Upgrades

To maximize resources, the county will use the same contractor to install Accessible Pedestrian Signal (APS) devices and improve six pedestrian ramps along Airport Rd at the intersections of 100th St SW and 94th St SW in Everett. Upgraded ramps feature detectable warning surfaces and APS pushbuttons which trigger audio cues alerting visually impaired pedestrians to begin crossing the intersection.

Traffic impacts will be minimal and last approximately 10 days:

• Beginning in mid-August, crews will work Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
• There will be single lane closures during construction, but two-way traffic will be functioning during and after construction hours.
• Bus stops at project locations may be temporarily relocated within a close distance from normal stops. This affects Everett Transit northbound and southbound stops, one TransWest shuttle stop, and Swift northbound and southbound stops. Access to the Swift card reader for pedestrians will be maintained throughout the project.
• Pedestrian access to crosswalks will be available throughout construction.
