Calling All Artists! Gig Harbor Seeks Creators For New Project

GIG HARBOR, WA — Want to share your art with the world? Here's a great opportunity, courtesy the City of Gig Harbor.

The Gig Harbor Arts Commission on Tuesday put out a call to all artists, whittlers or other carvers, for their annual "Harbor Arbor Art 2022" project. According to the commission's post, the city needs artists to carve tree snags around town.

Tree snags are dead or trimmed trees that the city had to cull to preserve public safety, but that have been left to decay naturally. Both of the tree snags that will be used for this year's Harbor Arbor Art were culled because they were infected with laminated root rot.

Both of this year's snags are near Grandview Forest Park, one inside the park proper near the public restroom building. The other is by Grandview Street.

If you're interested in making them your own, the City of Gig Harbor is accepting online applications through Oct. 11. The commission only asks that the carving costs less than $5,500 and is finished by Dec. 13, and that it is environmentally friendly and doesn't include political, religious, or potentially offensive themes.
