City of Gig Harbor Asks Residents To Keep Storm Drains Clear

Now that fall is here and leaves are falling on sidewalks and driveways they often block stormdrains, which can cause flooding.

As the wind blows leaves and rain washes city streets, the city is asking residents to clear storm drains.

The city is asking residents toΒ clearΒ storm drainsΒ ofΒ leaves and otherΒ debrisΒ to help prevent flooding. Now that fall is here and leaves are falling on sidewalks and driveways theyΒ oftenΒ block stormdrains, which can cause flooding.

The Public Works CrewΒ is working hard to keep the drains clear during these stormyΒ weather events, and as rain continues, theyΒ will continue to focusΒ on keeping stormwater drains and catch basins clear. Residents can help byΒ clearing the debris away from the top and sides of grates in their neighborhoods. Clearing storm drains is the most important thing people can do to protect their property and prevent water from pooling in the streets and causing traffic hazards.

Residents wishing to report drainage issues or flooding problems along roadways in their neighborhoods should contact the city atΒ 851-6170.

Homeowners of flat-topped structures β€” especially mobile homes, car ports and boat marinas β€” also should take steps to safely removeΒ leaves and standing water from their roofs. The combination of wet leaves and heavy rainfall increases the chance for aΒ leaky roof.
