Kids Corner: Arts and Crafts at the Museum

Is your child interested in the history of the Narrows Bridge? On Saturday, May 14 the Harbor History Museum will be hosting their monthly Kids Corner that will be entirely focused on Galloping Gertie.

Kids Corner is a time for children to come and engage in a hands-on craft or activity. This month, children will be able to watch a clip of the Narrows Bridge collapsing and then recreate a similar bridge with a [hopefully] different outcome.

“Most of the children that come through the Museum know about Galloping Gertie, but they don’t know the details; why it collapsed, what could have prevented it,” says Alyssa Taylor, Group Tour Coordinator. “We wanted to give children the opportunity to learn more about the Narrows and other types of bridges with a hands-on activity.”

The Gig Harbor Peninsula Historical Society dba Harbor History Museum was founded in 1963, and opened a museum in 1973. The Society moved in to their new 14,500 square foot facility in September 2010. The mission of the Harbor History Museum is to create opportunities to experience the heritage of the greater Gig Harbor communities. We do this by collecting, preserving, and sharing this area’s history. The museum is open Tuesday – Sunday, 10am –5pm, except major holidays.
