📰 News we're reading

• Changes ahead for one of Gig Harbor's only affordable housing developments (thenewstribune.com) — One of Gig Harbor’s few deeply affordable apartment complexes, Norwegian Wood, is staying in federal housing programs and is slated for renovations, despite tenant worries about delayed income-certification paperwork. The Bellevue-based owner says certifications are being processed and multiple long-term agreements legally require the property to remain affordable for decades, a critical safeguard in a city where typical rents top $1,800 for a one-bedroom.

• Waterfront Alliance promotes Clare Dunis to executive director (gigharbornow.org) — Gig Harbor’s Downtown Waterfront Alliance has promoted special projects and outreach director Clare Dunis to executive director starting Jan. 9, 2026, succeeding Carrianne Ekberg. Dunis, who now calls Gig Harbor home, plans to build on recent successes like the revitalized Waterfront Farmers Market and community art projects while Ekberg stays involved as a volunteer.

• Ferguson proposes $3 billion plan to preserve bridges and roads, build new ferries (gigharbornow.org) — Gig Harbor–area drivers could see more work on the aging Tacoma Narrows Bridge as Gov. Bob Ferguson pitches a $3 billion, bond-funded plan to repair roads and bridges and add three new ferries. The decade-long proposal targets preservation backlogs, ferry electrification, and flood-damaged highways, but still needs legislative approval and faces skepticism over new state borrowing.
