Gig Harbor Appears to be Target of a Check Scam

Be on the lookout. It appears check scammers are targeting people in the Harbor.

The scam involves residents receiving a check in the mail, according to The Peninsula Gateway:

According to the letter, Earl was entitled to a guaranteed sum of $750,000 in the form of a certified check, with the enclosed check of more than $3,200 the amount deducted from the prize in order to pay a tax payment of nearly $2,000 for nonresidents of the United Kingdom. The letter further indicated Earl was to make the tax payment via Western Union or Money Gram.

These scammers look like they're coming at us via both snail mail and e-mail. They come in different forms, too: a Nigerian prince, a winning lottery settlement, etc.

All of them want us to send money. It's definitely a scam at that point, right?
