Harborview Construction Nearing Completion Ahead of Schedule

Good news for drivers, as the longstanding road closure near the Harborview/Stinson intersection is drawing to a close.

GIG HARBOR, WA β€” Drivers tired of backups and delays along Harborview Drive will only have to deal with the mess a little longer, according to a recent update from the City of Gig Harbor.

The Harborview/Stinson Improvement Project has been renovating the intersection of Harborview Drive and Stintson Avenue forcing closures on-and-off since October.

During construction, Harborview Drive has been completely closed southbound between North Harborview Drive and Stinson Avenue, and drivers are currently detoured through the area. That detour will remain in place into next week, the city said, but will be removed soon as crews have finished paving the new roundabout at the Harborview/Stinson intersection.

"The roundabout option gives a lower wait time per vehicle, lower operational costs, and provides heightened safety for first responder vehicles than a stoplight," the city said in a news release. "As an added benefit, during phase one of construction, the City was able to repair a sewer main, that, left unchecked, could have spilled into the Harbor."

The exact date for the grand reopening has not been announced, though the update suggests it will only be a matter of days. Even if it takes a full week, it'll still be much faster than the original timeline, which had the road reopening at the end of June.
