Ski Areas Are Open - And Gig Harbor Has Safety Gear For You

Stop by a local fire station and pick up a helmet before you head to the slopes.

GIG HARBOR, WA - Two popular local ski areas opened for business on Friday, and the Gig Harbor Fire Department wants you to stay safe on the slopes.

The department is selling ski and snowboard helmets for $22 at the Kimball Drive fire station. And, the fire department will custom size the helmet for you. Helmets are available as long as supplies last.

Crystal Mountain opened at 9 a.m. Friday. The mountain has collected nearly 30 inches of snow over the last two days. As of Friday, the Discovery beginner area is open, as well as the gondola and the Green Valley quad. You can check out up-to-the-minute lift status and snow totals here.

Meanwhile up north, the Mt. Baker ski opened on Friday after the area collected some 45 inches of snow over the last few days. The Heather Meadows area was open Friday morning, but more areas may open throughout the day. Check conditions here.

Stevens Pass and the Summit at Snoqualmie are closed Friday, but may open later this weekend.
