New Kumon Learning Center Opens Downtown
Kirkland Kumon Center's after-school math and reading programs use an individualized learning approach developed in Japan.

Kumon, a national company that offers after-school math and reading tutoring programs, on Thursday cut the ribbon on its new Kirkland Kumon Center downtown at 385 Kirkland Avenue.
Educator Peter Youngs of Kirkland, who has spent two decades teaching English skills and communication courses at Bellevue College and other local institutions, will operate the center.
โAt Kumon, we believe children have unlimited potential to succeed,โ he said in a press release. โI saw the success of Kumon with my own two daughters. I am now eager to bring the power of the Kumon Method to the children of Kirkland.โ
The Kumon methodology originated in Japan in 1958 and uses an individualized approach to help children progress by ability rather than age or grade.
In addition to weekly classes, the Kirkland Kumon Center plans to hold education events open to the public, including Family Education Nights on topics such as reading comprehension, eliminating homework hassles and preparing for the SAT.
