Poll: Paper or Plastic -- Should Kirkland Ban the Latter?

The Seattle City Council just approved a ban on plastic bags to protect wildlife and the environment.

Shoppers in Seattle will have to bring their own bags or pay a nickel for each paper bag starting in July.

The Seattle City Councilย voted unanimously this week to ban plastic shopping bagsย at grocery, retail and convenience stores. (There areย some exceptions.) The measureโ€”which follows bans in Edmonds, Bellingham and Mukilteoโ€”still needs the signature of Mayor Mike McGinn.

So, we know that stray plastic bags are bad for the environment and wildlife. And we know lots of people already have reusable grocery bags.

But we also know they sometimes forget them at home and end up asking for plastic. And those bags can come in handy for things like lining small trashcans or picking up after the dog.
