Clover Park Mulls Plan To Rename High School Gymnasium
The district wants to name the gym after longtime boys basketball coach Mel Ninnis, but is asking for public input first.
LAKEWOOD, WA — The Clover Park School District is thinking about renaming a high school gym after a longtime teacher and coach, but wants the public to weigh in before it makes that call.
The district says the goal is to rename Clover Park High's gymnasium after Mel Ninnis, who was a boys basketball coach and teacher at the school for many years. According to the school, Ninnis was the CPHS assistant boys' basketball coach from 1985-94, but toak over as head coach in 95, leading the boys to 14 league and district titles, and even a state championship victory in 2011.
"He firmly believed in each student and their potential, and he used basketball as a conduit to teach them life skills," the district said.
