LAKEWOOD, WA — One person has died after his vehicle collided with a dump truck in Spanaway early Thursday morning.

Deputies say they received the call just after 10 a.m., warning them of a serious crash in the 16800 block of Spanaway Loop Rd S. When first responders arrived, they found a silver sedan, which had crashed into a dump truck's trailer. The Sheriff's Department says its deputies quickly located the driver of the sedan and tried to provide first aid, but he was pronounced dead shortly afterwards. The driver of the dump truck was unharmed.

Deputies then closed Spanaway Loop in both directions between Military Rd S and 174th St S.

Drivers were advised to avoid the area, as the severity of the crash indicated it would take several hours to clear the scene. That proved true, as the road remained fully closed until 2 p.m.

While clearing the debris and investigating the cause of the crash, deputies say they learned that the sedan had been reported stolen just before the accident. The vehicle had apparently been left running unattended at a convenience store in Lakewood when it had been taken.

A preliminary investigation of the incident indicates the stolen sedan had been heading southbound on Spanaway Loop Rd S and was coming out of a turn when it pulled across the center line and into the front end of the dump truck's trailer.
