Lakewood Celebrates 25th Anniversary With Art Contest

The anniversary celebration will kick off with the city's 25th annual art contest, but many more events are planned through the year.

LAKEWOOD, WA — The City of Lakewood was officially incorporated back on February 26, 1996. Now, as the city draws close to its 25th birthday, officials are planning a series of events to celebrate a quarter century of their community.

For their first big 25th event, the city and Pierce County Libraries have teamed up for the 25th Anniversary Art Contest.

Contestants can use all sorts of mediums, from photography, collage, painting, drawing, sculpture or mixed media. Submissions should focus on one of two themes: "Unity" or "Love Lakewood."

“The theme of unity is a broad topic, and I’d love to see the talented artists of our great City be creative with it," said Hank Jones, a member of the Lakewood Youth Council. "I also think that the country is incredibly divided at the moment, and a theme of unity is exactly what our city needs. Unity means coming together as a community, and I think that this is an awesome narrative for the celebrations of our City’s 25th birthday.”

Cash prizes will be awarded for the top three submissions from each age bracket, 1st to 4th grade, 5th to 8th grade, 9th to 12th grade and Adults. The overall winner may also have their art featured on a local signal box, and the first place in each category will have their art featured in Lakewood Connections Magazine. The top ten will also be featured on the City's website.
